Co-principle Investigator, Cotton Production in Xinjiang, 2009. Surveys of cotton producers in Xinjiang
and Yellow River valley to understand the difference between different production systems. Funded by
Cotton Incorporated and National Science Foundation of China.
Co-principle Investigator, Cotton Transportation Cost in China, 2008. Surveys of cotton peddlers,
managers of cotton ginning factories, managers of textile mills in Beijing and Fugou (in Henan province) to
understand the transaction costs from fields or ports to textile mills. Funded by Cotton Incorporated and
National Science Foundation of China.
Organizer, Production Cost of Fruit in China, 2007. Surveys of fruit producers and processors in
Shandong province. Funded by California Department of Food and Agriculture.
Organizer, China’s Cotton Processing Market, 2007. Surveys of different types of cotton ginning factories
(big vs small, collected-owned vs private) in Fugou (in Henan province) to understand the ginning cost.
Funded by Cotton Incorporated.

Principle Investigator, Optimal Strategy to Manage the Buildup of Resistance to Bt Cotton in China,
2006. Surveys of more than 100 village leaders in Yellow River valley (Shandong, Hebei and Henan
provinces) to understand the cotton distribution and monitoring cost. Funded by Economy and Environment
Program for Southeast Asia.
Survey team leader, Cost and Benefit of Bt Cotton in China, 1999. Surveys of about 300 households to
understand the detailed information of cost and benefits of Bt cotton in Shandong province. This survey had
been repeated 5 times up to now and the total surveyed households are more than 1000. Funded by National
Science Foundation of China.
Principle Investigator, Chemical Use and the Impact on Social and Economy in Rural Area, 1998.
Surveys of more than 200 farmers in Zhejiang provinces to understand their pesticides application behaviors,
poisoned conditions over years. Medical doctors examined farmer’s healthy right after pesticide application
and farmers’ blood samples were examined. Funded by National Science Foundation of China.
Co-principle Investigator, Land Tenure and Forest Development, 1997. Surveys of 200 plots of
forestlands in Yunnan province to understand the impact of land tenure. Funded by MacAthur Foundation
and Stanford University.
Survey team leader, Micro-credit in China, 1996. Surveys of about 1000 households in Henan, Jiangxi
provinces to understand the micro-credit market in China. Funded by Ford Foundation.
Participant, more than 10 field surveys, 1994-1996. These surveys includes Land Tenure and Its Impact,
Agricultural Research and Technology Extension Policy in China, Agricultural Fertilizer and Pesticides
Market, Poverty, Nutrition and Gender Issue, China’s Grain Market, Aquaculture Production and
Consumption in China. I have personally interviewed more than 300 respondents in 20 provinces in China.
